Bali Zoo

Bali Zoo, locally referred to as ‘Kebun Binatang Bali’, is the only animal attraction in Bali using ‘zoo’ in its name. The zoo is set over 8ha of lush tropical gardens in the village of Singapadu, Gianyar regency. The zoo is a convenient stopover before Ubud on tours from the island's south. 

Bali Zoo is home to various tropical plants and an extensive collection of fauna ranging from mammals, birds and reptiles. The zoo is shady and pleasant to walk through and also features a range of experiences, such as elephant and pony rides, photo sessions with animals, as well as outbound adventures.

Since its inception in 2002, Bali Zoo has extended its range of features in addition to its existing daily programs. The zoo prepared its night attraction package in 2007 which takes visitors to observe the hundreds of animals after dusk. This ‘Night at The Zoo’ enables you to observe Bali Zoo’s large number of nocturnal animals, held on Wednesday and Saturday nights from 18:00 to 21:00 local time, which is concluded by a fire dance show.

By day, the zoo is a place where families and children can meet the various animals in the secure enclosures, including Sumatran tigers, white tigers, lions, babi rusa, deer, orang-utans, Komodo dragons, crocodiles, iguanas, turtles, snakes, Bali starlings, cassowaries, peacocks and many other exotic creatures.

The zoo has also successfully bred a number of animals. Its Bengal tiger pair, named Buntung and Kartini, have produced seven generations of cubs, the most recent being the trio, Punja, Delta and Gangga. The successful breeding program has produced over 15 tigers since 2007.

Daily programs include feeding the animals, and if it's cute and cuddly that you're after - why not head down to the petting area and snuggle with a baby monkey? The zoo staff will help take a photo for you or assist in taking one with your own camera. All of the inhabitants are fully cared for by the resident veterinarian.

The Bali Zoo Park is within close reach of all the main tourist centres in central Bali, with signs strategically posted just after the main Ubud-Gianyar junction. The zoo is situated within the quaint locality of Singapadu.

Dining facilities at the zoo include the Elephant View Restaurant, which serves Asian and is situated in the middle of the zoo with an open-air view of the elephant trail and gardens. The Okavango Restaurant, near the entrance is where to enjoy western selections while viewing the African lion enclosure daily from 09:00 to 17:00.

The ‘Treewalk Adventure’ is an outbound activity facility that enables guests to take on the high ropes which will also provide a half-hour adrenaline rush. The feature is also complemented with a Flying Fox zoom line of approximately 125 metres.

Activities outside the zoo grounds include an interesting village trek, which takes you on a trek through forests, lush rice paddies, rushing rivers, and rural Balinese village life at large. The two hour trek also includes a visit the area’s subak Gunung Temple, and return stopovers to the artisan homes of gold, silversmiths and stone carvers. 

Bali Zoo is wheelchair friendly, and the staff members on location are ready to assist visitors with disabilities. Special Bali Zoo souvenirs, such as photo frames, T-shirts, mugs, egg paintings and many other interesting handicrafts are available at the souvenir shop inside the zoo and at the restaurants.

How to get there: on the way to Ubud north from the Batubulan main road, turn right at the Singapadu communal meeting hall. The zoo is only 15 minutes from Ubud, 45-60 minutes from the southern main tourist areas.
